The attorney filling this in-house position will be part of the Law Department’s Intellectual Property Team, providing support and advice for Cargill’s patent filing, prosecution and opposition activities. They will work closely with various Cargill businesses and its R&D Function, principally in the feed and food areas. They will collaborate with other Cargill patent attorneys, lawyers and paralegals who provide legal counsel to Cargill worldwide as part of a multidisciplinary team.
40% Coordinating patent activities generally, including various business unit intellectual property review team meetings, providing patentability and infringement opinions, and developing patent strategies;
30% Drafting third party observations, oppositions and responses to oppositions on behalf of Cargill’s businesses and representing Cargill at oral proceedings before the European Patent Office;
10% Developing, coordinating and providing training for key employees on intellectual property matters;
20% Working with other law team members to provide counseling to Cargill's businesses, including in the areas of due diligence and the preparation and negotiation of various agreements relating to acquisitions, dispositions, joint ventures, technology licenses, research and development agreements, confidentiality agreements and other transactional matters.
The exact percentages will vary depending on the businesses and/or projects being supported.
Fully qualified European Patent Attorney
4 years post-qualification experience
Bachelors of Science in chemical, biochemical, food technology, chemical engineering or biological arts
Significant drafting and prosecution experience
Strong strategic and commercial conceptual strength
Strong collaborative mindset and the ability to contribute to an inclusive and supportive team
Experience working in-house or with a law firm with a strong commercial focus is strongly preferred
Experience as a Representative at oral proceedings is strongly preferred
Excellent academic track record
Creative, resilient, and flexible style and approach to solving legal problems
Demonstrated ability to have a broad perspective and approach work with curiosity
Ability and desire to work with diverse teams, both locally and across geographies, in meeting corporate goals and missions.
Excellent communication, advocacy, and drafting skills.
