Position Purpose & Summary

The position purpose is to read and record all microbiological test results.The Micro Technologist will communicate all results to appropriate personnel, ensuring customer requirements are met in a timely manner.The microbiologist will set up all Listeria tests and any extended tested as necessary.The microbiologist is responsible for weekly and monthly lab equipment calibrations.The microbiologist will assist in training new employees in microbiologist duties.The microbiologist will be trained in all employee functions of the lab, filling in these roles during co-workers times off, including weekends.All listed responsibilities will be carried out with limited supervision.

Principal Accountabilities

20% - Run Pathogen Assays – The microbiologist is responsible for running all end stage testing using the pathogen testing platform GeneQuence, from the Neogen company.This includes tests for both Salmonella and Listeria on products, raw materials, and environmental samples.Will include enrichment transfer steps as well.

20% - Read all microbiological tests – This includes reading Aerobic Plate Count and Yeast & Mold agar plates for colonies and coliform MPN test tubes.These indicator tests are read 2 and 5 days after set ups.

20% - Record and communicate all test results – Ensure that all pathogen and indicator tests are recorded on the proper paperwork assigned to each plant.The information is then transferred to the computer system including but not limited to SAP and Microsoft Excel.Any out of specification results must be communicated to the appropriate plants and personnel.This also includes communication on any irregular results that may not be out of specification.Must work with other QC labs to ensure timely results recorded when shipments are require quickly.

15% - Sub-sample finished products and raw materials – Finished good need composited into one sample using aseptic technique

15% - Perform plating procedures - Using aseptic techniques this involves setting up all the indicator testing.This includes diluting samples, creating serial dilutions, proper pipetting techniques, and pouring agar plates.Must be able to record sample information as it relates to testing procedure.

5% - Set up extended testing – When non-routine testing is required on extended testing, this position is responsible for setting up and reading these tests.The information must also be communicated to the appropriate plants and personnel in a timely manner.

5% - Perform any other lab duties as assigned – includes training new team members

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’sDegree in Scientific field

  • Ability to manage multiple tasks at any one time

  • Ability to work with minimal supervision

  • Previous work in a laboratory setting

  • This position works occasional weekends and holidays.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’sDegree in Biology or Microbiology

  • Previous experience working with pathogen testing in a manufacturing lab environment, specifically the Neogen Corporation systems.

  • Proficiency in use of Microsoft Office programs

  • Proficiency in use of SAP software

  • Must be able to lift 55 pounds without assistance

  • Must be able to work in close quarters with coworkers.
