Cargill Protein is a leader at delivering primary processed and valued added proteins in to the Foodservice, Retail and Manufacturing market channels. It operates several food processing facility located in the US and Canada. Our customers in Foodservice are comprised of large national restaurant chain operators, contract feeding companies and both national and regional foodservice distributors. Our Retail customers are comprised of large national grocery retailers and warehouse clubs. Our Manufacturing customers are comprised of large branded manufacturers of retail consumer packaged goods. The customer from these channels are attracted to working with Cargill because of our demonstrated leadership in delivering innovative products, integrity, operational excellence, food safety and risk management.

Cargill Protein Group is looking for a Research & Development Manager – Foodservice Poultry. This role is accountable for providing technical leadership and will focus on 1) Innovation pipeline growth for Foodservice – Poultry based products through new product and process development, 2) Input into the overall Innovation plan for Cargill Protein Foodservice and execution of the Innovation plan, 3) Talent management, 4) Collaboration across Cargill and the Protein Group Channels on high value opportunities, and 5) Partnering with operations, procurement, supply chain, and regulatory in managing projects and products throughout their respective lifecycles. This position will lead a team of Food Scientists that are dedicated to strategic focus areas for the Cargill Protein Group Foodservice Channel. The ideal candidate will possess high integrity, courage, and character as personal traits.

Principal Accountabilities

35% Provide Technical Leadership to the Foodservice Channel – partner with business leads/managers, marketing managers, consumer insights, FSQR, culinary and with external technology partners to identify emerging trends for the Foodservice channel focused on poultry products. Provide direct coordination and development of the innovation pipeline/portfolio with unique product offerings. Serve as the strategic/tactical enabler to the development of customer focused innovation products to ensure compliance with IP laws, regulations and company policies. Provide leadership to establish procedures and tools to manage the intellectual assets. Drive innovation plans for key customers.

35% Execution of Innovation Plan – contributes to Cargill Protein Foodservice strategic direction through the development of new products by translating insights into new product offerings that win in the marketplace that align with our innovation plan. Utilize existing Cargill core technologies to develop new products as well as identify and assess new technologies needed to deliver upon our business needs.

20% Talent Management – lead talent management efforts for the Research, Development and Innovation team specifically for attraction, retention and development of personnel. Accountable for performance management, talent development, succession planning and engagement of direct reports for the RDI team.

10% Resource and Budget Management – manages resources dedicated to customer focused innovation. Leverages cross-functional resources for joint development across channel and Enterprise.

Qualifications

Minimum Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in food science or related field

  • 6 years combined professional experience in R&D

  • 4 years of experience with project or portfolio management

  • Ability to manage multiple complex projects simultaneously

  • Demonstrated proficiency in working with ambiguous direction

  • Proven ability to turn ideas into commercialized products – technical acumen

  • Experience working successfully in a matrix organization, experience working with cross-functional teams (marketing, insights, sales, ops, FSQR, cross BU)

  • Excellent documentation practices

  • Demonstrated financial and business acumen

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office tools and business reporting systems

  • Strong organizational and accuracy skills

  • Excellent communication and conflict management skills required

  • Good decision-making; ability to prioritize goals and work

  • Strategic thinker with ability to build effective plans to support strategic initiatives

  • Tech-savvy and comfortable with evolving business-critical technology

  • Occasional travel; up to 20%

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree or higher in food science or related field

  • 5 years’ experience leading complex cross-functional project teams
