Position Overview –

The Senior Convenience Foods Scientist is responsible for driving growth through creating and executing industry driven product innovation projects in shelf stable retorted and hot fill convenience foods. The role will also be required to strengthen Cargill’s ability to market its products through application of shelf stable retorted and hot fill convenience foods product development competencies such as formulation knowledge, processing knowledge, product prototyping, application efficacy assessment, etc. The individual will create and maintain the thermal processing unit operations capability and associated pilot plant space and prime move complying with the associated operating, safety, food safety, and regulatory procedures while maintaining technical leadership of the shelf stable thermal processing category through ongoing literature review, industry seminars, etc. The individual will collaborate with Cargill ingredient businesses to determine and demonstrate the benefits of Cargill ingredients in the product applications. The role will also collaborate with customers to execute product development projects.

Impact Area -

Intended to provide state of the art product development competencies in the thermal processing food industry and knowledge of Cargill’s portfolio/competencies for all of Cargill’s food and ingredient businesses to create or strengthen product propositions and utilize product development capabilities to partner with customers to commercialize their new products.

Requires the ability to work directly with senior development scientists at the leading branded food companies and influence their product development decisions that benefits both Cargill and the customer.

Require the ability to independently lead projects.

Principal Accountabilities -

30% Drive profitable growth through creating and executing industry driven product innovation projects in shelf stable retorted and hot fill convenience foods.

40% Strengthen Cargill’s ability to market its products through application of shelf stable retorted and hot fill convenience foods product development competencies such as formulation knowledge, processing knowledge, product prototyping, taste assessments of products in the category, application efficacy assessment, etc.

15% Create and maintain the thermal processing unit operations capability and associated pilot plant space and prime move complying with the associated operating, safety, food safety, and regulatory procedures.

10% Maintain technical leadership of shelf stable thermal processing category through ongoing literature review, industry seminars, etc.

5% Interact with customers to discover new opportunities and present value propositions.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • BS in Food Science or Engineering.

  • 8 years of industry experience, including several years of retort foods experience.

  • Ability to independently operate packaging and thermal processing pilot plant equipment.

  • In depth knowledge of thermal processing principles.

  • Communicate effectively on Cargill’s cross functional teams and with customers.

  • Create shelf stable retorted foods with commercial ingredients.

  • Lead technical projects and participate on cross-functional teams.

  • Proven technical solving capabilities.

  • Develop and execute technical plans.

  • Familiar with standard industry consumer insights tools used in food product development, especially sensory testing.

  • Taste products typical of the category and provide sensory assessment.

  • Manage multiple projects, meeting goals on time and within budget.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced degree in Food Science or Engineering.

  • Experience in multiple categories and brands is a plus.

  • In depth technical knowledge of food formulations, food processing (especially retorting), ingredient functionality and their interactions.
