The Cocoa SnD department is responsible for providing proprietary fundamental analyses of the cocoa markets, primarily for the Business Unit’s commercial and strategic needs. The analysis of the cocoa bean and cocoa products demand fundamentals is based on collecting external/internal data and intelligence on cocoa processing activity, trade data, as well as manufacturing and retail trends of cocoa containing consumer goods worldwide.
In this context, we are looking to recruit an energetic and creative Cocoa & Chocolate Demand Analyst. This position requires intellectual curiosity and conceptualization, ability to deal with conflicting information, open-mindedness to challenge face-value statements, keen sense of structure to keep in control of data flows. Strong analytical skills need to be combined with good communication skills. Obviously, a good understanding of demand drivers from both a commodity and a retail perspective are essential for this position (eg: price and income elasticity of demand).
Identify and analyze data on demand of cocoa beans and cocoa products in all major consuming regions, with the objective of producing an integrated and coherent picture. The data to be collected and analysed includes: trade flows of cocoa beans and products, grinding statistics, estimates of grind and press capacity utilization, manufacturing data, wholesale and retail data, etc.(40%).
Update regular demand-side reports and presentations on short- and long-term trends. Provide frequent commercial and analytical input to the trading teams, through reports and face-to-face communication. Prepare presentations for key customers, in coordination with other SnD team members (25%).
Work on the development and application of new demand monitoring tools (for instance: processing margin indices for the various steps along the cocoa value chain, inventory intelligence on cocoa products, demand trends for alternative products to cocoa, estimates of customer cover, correlation between cocoa demand and other commodities, etc.) (15%).
Adequately store relevant data on the SnD database. Perform regular data reconciliations, primarily based on trade flows and inventory statistics (working together with the other SnD team members) (15%).
Any other duties as assigned(5%).
University level education (macro-economics, finance preferred);
5 years experience;
2 years’ experience in analytic role (exposure to building/maintaining S&D models is an advantage);
Excellent analytical and conceptual skills. Ability to understand and deal effectively with complex data inter-relations.Ability to deal with conflicting information.;
Curiosity and creativity to go beyond the surface and challenge ambiguous data;
Good interpersonal and communication skills, including presentation;
Practical understanding of economics theory;
Keen sense of structure, to keep in control of data flows. Some affinity with database software and design (knowledge of SAS is an advantage);
Passion & strong sense of ownership for delivering top quality work and following up its impact on the business;
Language proficiency in English (any additional language is useful);
Ability to work with Excel and Powerpoint.
Knowledge of S&D analysis, build-up/maintenance;
Knowledge of the cocoa and chocolate industry;
Understanding of demand models within food FMCG context;
VBA or comparable programming skills.
