The Enterprise Communications Leader (ECL) drives the development and execution of a Corporate Affairs (CA) strategy, working with the enterprise leadership team, as well as CA subject matters experts, to drive business growth, and protect and enhance the enterprise’s reputation and brand. The position reports to the Business Communications Leader Corporate Affairs to ensure alignment with Cargill’s overall CA strategy.
10% - INTEGRATED STRATEGY & MEASUREMENT:
Working in concert with the enterprise leadership team and CA Subject Matter Experts (SMEs), leads the development of a fully integrated CA strategy that supports the enterprise’s priorities across all CA practice areas, including internal/external communications, government relations, corporate responsibility and brand.
Supports a comprehensive issues mapping process for the enterprise to surface key issues by stakeholder, which will be a critical input into the overall integrated CA strategy.
Develops key metrics and scoreboard for tracking appropriate process and outcome measures for enterprise CA efforts.
50% - INTERNAL/EXTERNAL COMMUNICATIONS:
Strategy: Provides counsel, strategic direction, management oversight and support for external and internal communications associated with the CPS enterprise, its groups and businesses consistent with enterprise strategies, Corporate Affairs governance, and Cargill’s brand positioning and messaging.
Narrative: Establishes and oversees CPS’s global communications message agenda, framework and activities in close connection with the business priorities. Delivers content in support of enterprise narrative for use in various companywide channels.
Employee Engagement and Change: Directs global communications efforts to engage employees, drive business literacy, support and manage significant change, and maintain focus on delivering results.
Proactive PR Strategies: Develops strategies in conjunction with CA to position enterprise with key stakeholders.
Mergers and Acquisitions/Transformations: Oversees and facilitates planning and execution, working in active consultation with CA practice leaders and representing CA’s stakeholder management interests.
Digital and Social: Identifies enterprise D&S priorities and works with CA to build out overall strategy and capabilities.
10% - CRISIS MANAGEMENT:
Facilitates strategy development for crisis situations, managing coordination between enterprise leadership and the CA Global Management Team (GMT)
Provides guidance and direction to enterprise leadership and aligns with Corporate Affairs GMT to ensure that actions taken are consistent with protecting and advancing Cargill’s brand and reputation.
Ensures appropriate risk mitigation plans are in place and media/crisis training has been completed across the enterprise.
10% - CORPORATE RESPONSIBILITY/COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT:
Partners with CPS enterprise and business leadership to promote and support community engagement activities within the enterprise, its businesses and locations consistent with guidelines provided by the global Corporate Responsibility team.
Partners with Corporate Responsibility team members, Corporate Affairs leadership and business leadership to identify appropriate strategies for engagement with multiple external stakeholders (e.g., NGOs, customers, suppliers, community representatives, academia, public officials, etc.) relative to the enterprise’s community engagement efforts.
Coaches enterprise leaders on how to independently implement community relations strategies and initiatives that support the enterprise and its businesses.
20% - PEOPLE/BUDGET MANAGEMENT:
Manages and provides coaching to communications and community relations professionals working within the enterprise and its businesses, including the modeling of best practices and Cargill’s Leadership Expectations. Ensures productivity of the CPS enterprise team and quality execution.
Participates in selection of communication team members within the CPS enterprise, and helps plan for future workforce needs.
Partners with other members of the Corporate Affairs GMT to develop, manage and engage job family talent.
Manages budget associated with communications within the CPS enterprise and works with Corporate Affairs globally on identifying and executing on enterprise priorities.
Bachelor's degree; preferably in Journalism or related discipline
15 years experience as a communications professional and/or relevant experience in leading communications efforts
Demonstrated effectiveness in leading teams and developing people
Experience counseling senior leadership
Experience leading communications during organizational change
Experience with media relations, including crisis communications
Ability to travel up to 15%
Excellent communicator – communicates effectively through written and oral communications and has exceptional skills in helping leaders and organizations define and develop messages that are clear, concise, creative and persuasive.
Change management expertise
Ability to synthesize diverse activities into a clear and compelling framework that helps stakeholders understand how discrete actions support a broader agenda
Strong coaching and influencing skills and experience working in a communications counselor capacity with senior leaders
Ability to deal with ambiguity
Fluency in English
