Position Purpose & Summary

The VP, Business Communications Leader is responsible for setting the communications vision for Cargill and creating an integrated stakeholder management strategy with the Enterprise Communications Leads on key topics such as public policy, thought leadership and corporate responsibility, and financial performance. This work will include crisis management, anticipating emerging issues and developing a “pre-active” practice to prepare Cargill for short-term shocks to the system.

This position reports to the VP, Corporate Affairs, is a part of the Corporate Affairs (CA) Global Management Team, and is located in Wayzata, MN.

Principal Accountabilities

50% - Strategy Development/Planning and Execution/ External Communications & Business Partnerships

  • Develop and lead an external communications strategy for Cargill in support the organizations strategic objectives. Ensure the enterprise and regional communications strategies are integrated and aligned.

  • Develop and implement integrated communications strategies to advance Cargill’s strategic intent across key stakeholder audiences including customers, prospects, vertical and horizontal media outlets, general public, etc.

  • In close partnership with the Enterprise Communications Leaders (ECLs), manage communications support to enterprises and business groups, ensuring they are aligned to the broader strategy and focused on Cargill’s top business priorities.

  • In close partnership with Regional Communications Leaders (RCLs), develop region-wide strategies to ensure a coordinated and consistent Cargill voice across our businesses and internal audiences in a given geography.

  • Ensure alignment with the Corporate Affairs Leadership Organizational Communications Leader to ensure messages around key issues impacting Cargill are aligned with the internal communications strategy.

  • Proactively identify relevant and emerging issues facing the organization and partner with the Corporate Affairs Global Management Team to identify opportunities and solutions

  • Create thought-leadership strategies that strategically position and advance Cargill’s vision.

  • Act as primary point of contact with media outlets, proactively pitching stories, responding to incoming media inquiries, developing media relationships and acting as a spokesperson for Cargill.

25% - People Resources & Budget Management

  • Accountable for performance management, talent development, succession planning, coaching and engagement of team

  • Manage the budget for external communications organization; determine resource needs, plan for future needs, approve selection decisions

  • Responsible for aligning overall team resources to execute against short and long term strategies.

  • Provides guidance to direct reports in areas of resource deployment and quality of communications products and services.

25% - Process Execution and Operating Excellence

  • Create and facilitate a strong issues management and strategic planning process.

  • Oversee coordination of multiple delivery channels to support communications strategies for targeted audiences.

  • Directs development and production of communications materials for targeted audiences.

  • Establish and oversee enforcement of the standards, policies, navigation and content on the organization’s Intranet site.

Minimum Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree; preferably in journalism, communications or a related field

  • 15 years of experience in corporate communications

  • 6 years of managerial experience

  • Extensive experience with external communications at a corporate level

  • Excellent presentation, public speaking and written communication skills

  • Exceptional organizational skills; ability to manage several projects at once, even while away from the office

  • Proficient skills in Microsoft Word and PowerPoint

  • An inspiring people leader with a track record of developing comprehensive communications strategy, planning and prioritization in a global setting across diverse businesses, markets and geopolitical circumstances

  • Experience developing stakeholder engagement plans and compelling narratives that demonstrate how our policy, financial performance and thought leadership positions advance our business objectives

  • A proven leader in crisis communications, issues management and media relations

  • Track record of success in large global organizations with matrixed reporting relationships between businesses and functions

  • Ability to manage through strategic ambiguity and create engaging narratives that move the organization forward

  • Demonstrated systems thinker who actively aligns company priorities and actions with Cargill narrative

  • Strategic planner who can translate high-level corporate strategy and vision into detailed communication plans and campaigns

  • Change management expert who can lead stakeholder mapping and change actions to accelerate behavior change

  • Ability to manage multiple, high profile projects simultaneously and assign both internal and external resources to provide surge capacity when needed

  • Proven C-suite coach who can influence, align through clear arguments and supporting points, and prepare executives for variety of internal speaking engagements

  • Strong relationship manager who exhibits grace under pressure with colleagues at all levels of the company

  • Proven people leader who can articulate inspiring agenda, provide clear direction to team members, and oversee detailed execution plans

  • Impeccable writing, attention to detail and coaching skills to help build strong team of internal communications professionals

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in the food and/or agriculture industry

  • Strong knowledge of social and digital media

  • Awareness of and relationships with external industry forums

  • Work or living experience outside of one’s home country (global experience)
