Cargill Corn Milling North America is a manufacturer of value-added corn and sugar based products serving the Food, Feed and Fermentation segments. From facilities in Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, Tennessee and Texas, we provide a wide variety of products and services including high fructose corn syrup, corn syrups, dextrose syrups and sucrose that are used in an array of beverage, brewing, confectionery, food and pharmaceutical applications. We also produce a variety of innovative, dry corn ingredients that are used in cereals, snacks, breads, tortillas and animal feed applications. In addition, we produce fuel-grade ethanol and are a leading supplier of corn oil, acidulants, corn gluten meal and corn gluten feed products.

Position Overview:

Utility/Sweepers keep the productions departments of the Indianapolis Corn Mill in clean and orderly conditions by performing the below duties. The Sweeper is also expected to cross train and hold additional job qualification in order to back fill vacations and absences throughout the facility.

In addition to these areas, the Utility/Sweeper will have an opportunity to participate with others in many different specialty tasks and projects. A few examples might include participation on the Safety committee or BST teams. The plant is a dry corn manufacturing facility and Sweepes will be subject to performing tasks working under varying temperature extremes, physical labor, dealing with heights, possible handling of chemicals, exposure to dust, some tasks that require use of a dust mask, and working around a wide variety of continuous process equipment.

Principal Accountabilities:

  • Cleans and sweeps floors, walls, overhead equipment, stair wells and ceilings in all production areas.

  • Maintains the facilities roof cleanliness and associated equipment as assigned by supervisor.

  • Cleans Production system/s as well as associated equipment as assigned by supervisor.

  • Changes dust collector socks/cartridges and properly disposes used materials.

  • Cleans corn storage bins and prepares them for new crop corn.

  • Follows required MSS schedule and utilizes MSS sheets to properly document sanitation records.

  • Cleans up spilled product throughout facility, removes visible foreign material(if applicable) and ensures product is fed into Feed In boxes.

  • Attends all required facility and department meetings/training.

  • Follows all Cargill safety and food safety policies, procedures and SOP’s.

  • Demonstrates clear and effective communication skills with all plant personnel via radio, face to face and written communication.

  • It is an expectation that employees will demonstrate equipment/area ownership through the use of Continuous Improvement(CI) tools.

  • Participates in all required investigations, near miss reporting and root cause analysis exercises.

  • Reports all known non-conformances regarding safety, Food Safety, quality and productivity immediately.

  • Works with contractors, inspectors and vendors as needed.

  • Trains/on boards other employees as required.

  • Attends shift meetings and has a operator to operator pass down at shift exchange.

  • Performs minor maintenance and PM’s to fix or prevent product/equipment leaks.

  • Receives materials and uses pallet jack to stage, store or remove materials, additives etc. throughout required facility areas.

  • Performs confined space entries for various assignments and properly completes all associated permits and required documentation.

  • Performs confined Elevated Work for various assignments and properly completes all associated permits and required documentation.

  • Performs proper LOTO for various task/assignments.

  • Follows the required tool color codes/guidelines related to the cleaning and handling of all in-process, waste and feed materials.

  • Utilizes central vacuum system to clean and maintain sanitation standards in production areas where available.

  • Responsible for the maintaining, storage and return of all cleaning/sanitation tools, carts, hoses etc. when not in use.

  • Reports all pest, rodent and bird activity to supervisor immediately.

  • Ensures all exterior windows, doors and interior fire doors are closed throughout production areas unless they are properly screened and free of damage, holes etc.

  • Responsible for checking in with supervisor on shift to report progress on assignments throughout scheduled shift.

  • Other duties as assigned.

  • High School education or equivalent.

  • Ability to work overtime, holidays, nights, weekends and rotating shifts.

  • Ability to work overtime.

  • Must be able to perform physical job duties including bending/stooping, climbing ladders, shoveling, and work in confined spaces.

  • Must be able to lift a minimum of 50 pounds.

  • Must be able to work under special work conditions, such as extreme heat or cold.

  • Ability to work in elevated areas.


  • Basic computer skills.

  • Forklift certified.

  • Able to perform physical job duties including open/close valves and pounding with hammer.

  • Able to operate heavy equipment and machinery.

  • Prior experience in production related work.

  • Able and willing to comply with all Cargill policies, health and safety requirements such as jewelry restrictions, the use and wearing of safety/personal protective equipment (e.g. wearing safety equipment such as hardhats, safety glasses, hearing protection, protective footwear, etc.).
