Position Purpose & Summary

Cargill is committed to deploying a health and safety strategy that will achieve Cargill’s goal of zero fatalities and serious injuries. Effective construction/contractor safety processes are a critical component of that strategy.

This position is global in scope and will be Cargill’s thought leader in construction safety industry practices and standards. The position is responsible for developing advanced construction safety concepts, standards and new processes within Cargill that will achieve our zero injury expectation for all contractor activity. The main purpose is to lead the design, communication and deployment of contractor/construction safety best practices and ensure these best practices are integrated into Cargill’s Capital Project Management process. Additionally, this position will lead the development of processes that build safety capability in our project teams, operations leaders and EHS professionals and ensures that we select contractors that share our safety vision and have the capability to achieve zero.

Principal Accountabilities

30% Leads Integration of Construction/Contractor Safety Best Practices

Leads integration of construction/contractor safety best practices into Cargill’s Capital Project Management process that clearly sets a zero injury/illness expectation on all Cargill projects. In collaboration with Capital Project Effectiveness team ensures safety requirements and considerations are effectively front-end loaded into Cargill projects. Leads development of safety deliverables in project gate reviews and defines project safety resource requirements. Ensure safety consideration are included in project constructability and operability review. Assures quality reviews are performed by the EHS SME assigned to project technical reviews (can be by being present). Participates on key constructability/operability reviews. Identifies construction leading practices/methods and develop guidance on how these can be incorporated into project early.

20% Leads Development of Contractor Safety Prequalification, Selection and Competency Requirements

Leads development of contractor safety prequalification, selection and competency requirements. In collaboration with the Capital Effectiveness Team and Strategic Sourcing, establishes contractor prequalification criteria and ensures safety is integrated into all phases of project bidding, contract requirements and selection process. Develop strategies and systems (e.g. technology) to manage contractor prequalification and competency verification information and data. Develop strategies to improve contractor safety competency in key geographies where contractor safety capability is a gap. Performs on site reviews as necessary to assess specific contractor safety programs and capability. Ensures EHS SME assigned to projects follow-up on mandatory safety projects for projects >$ 5 million.

30% Leads Improvement in Contractor Safety Competency of Project Teams.

Leads efforts to improve contractor safety competency of project teams through the development project safety management systems, tools, support materials and training. Assesses effectiveness of progress and provides coaching to project teams during project visits.

20% Develops Metrics, Construction/Contractor Audit Processes and Project Review Process to Verify Safety Improvement

Development of metrics, audit processes and post project reviews that assess the effectiveness our construction/contractor safety programs and verify compliance with Cargill standards and government requirements. Participates in relevant external EHS business and industry organization (e.g. IPA, CII) and seeks external benchmarking opportunities to bring “outside in” experience and best practices.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • 4-year Degree preferably Bachelor’s Degree in Science (Engineering, Health and Safety and Construction Management)

  • Minimum or 15 years’ experience in operations, safety and engineering with 10 years construction/project and safety management experience

  • Experience in supervising contractors

  • Strong safety education in industry leading construction practices

  • Demonstrated understanding of industry best practice and experience in leading best practice construction safety management techniques, tools and processes.

  • Demonstrated experience working with and influencing technical subject management experts and cross-function experts to execute (construction) projects that achieve world class results in constructability, operability and overall safety results.

  • Experience in leading construction safety management practices internationally.

  • High self-initiative, setting own goals and execution.

  • Motivations and ability to execute projects/tasks in a timely manner, strong prioritization and time management skills

  • Willingness to travel 50% including internationally

  • Ability to execute work with minimal supervision

  • Demonstrated high level of organization, written and verbal communication skill

Preferred Qualifications

  • Strong experience in integrating safety into capital project deployment processes.

  • Certified Safety Professional

  • Demonstrated skills at managing and leading complex and ambiguous situations

  • Demonstrated ability to facilitate group discussion and meetings.

  • Demonstrated ability to anticipate and mediate conflict; ability to develop solutions that all parties feel are equitable.

  • Fluency in Spanish or other growth area languages
