Position Purpose

The Senior Process Development Scientist position is responsible for supporting a core technology component area for the Starches, Sweeteners, and Texturizers (CSST) business as well as customers. The incumbent drives and supports the research group in a given implementation of business defined technology needs.

This position creates value for the business unit by developing, managing and executing research projects that are complex in nature and may require multidisciplinary approaches. Moreover, this position serves as a leader in process development, process improvement and piloting efforts and as a resource in one or more broad core technology components:

Core Technologies (e.g. separations, fermentation, product safety, milling and grinding)

Enabling sciences (e.g. process modeling, toxicology, advanced analytics, sensory, nutrition, sensory, chemistry)

Ingredients/Product Lines (e.g. Sweeteners, Dextrose, Fat/Oils)

Food Applications (e.g. dairy, convenience, beverages)

Principal Accountabilities

50%Provide subject matter expertise to project teams and functions. Offer technical guidance and scientific insight for new process development and process improvements. Serve as a technical lead or project manager for projects. Ensure that projects proceed according to plan and results are documented and communicated.

25%Lead new product or high-performance innovation piloting. Ensure pilot projects follow appropriate safety and food safety standards. Oversee pilot equipment care and maintenance. Troubleshoot issues as needed. Provide leadership and support for piloting efforts at other internal or external locations. Identify and lead evaluations of external process or manufacturing technologies or facilities. Help transition technology to commercial-scale operations.

10%Identify and develop new process or product opportunities that create distinct value and enable business growth.

5%Participate in intellectual property development and regulatory activities to support project and product line objectives.

5%Support and comply with corporate/local safety and food safety policies and procedures.

5% Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in chemistry, engineering or related field

  • Minimum five years of industrial research experience

  • Expertise in food process technologies and engineering principles relevant to process development and scale-up

  • Expertise in pilot equipment operations and configuration

  • Demonstrated willingness to learn

  • Work in a laboratory setting

  • Ability to adapt and learn in a changing work environment

  • Ability to manage multiple priorities

  • Strong attention to detail

  • Microsoft Office Suite experience

  • Ability to work independently

  • Ability to work in a team environment

  • Demonstrated strong problem-solving and analytical skills

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills

  • Ability to travel up to 25%

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s in chemistry, chemical engineering or related field

  • Minimum five years’ experience in new food process development

  • Minimum five years’ experience in process improvement or optimization efforts

  • Experience with leading piloting teams and operating pilot facilities

  • Experience in developing, leading, and participating in multidisciplinary teams

  • Experience in collaboration across engineering, QA/QC, operation, application, regulatory, and sales/marketing

  • Ability to identify, diagnose, and find solutions for complex process challenges

  • Demonstrated ability to design, execute, interpret, and communicate complex experiments

  • Demonstrated ability to communicate technical information at appropriate levels based on audience
