This position is based in Teaneck, NJ

The purpose is to support Cargill Ocean Transportation’s (OT) growth strategy by reinforcing our business development activity in the Americas from our New Jersey headquarters. This individual will identify and build long term relationships with new customers to execute the OT global trade flow strategy in ocean freight. Will take over specific responsibilities of Account Management for existing strategic customers. Will constitute the main link between these customers with OT trading desks and other OT teams across the globe. Is responsible to define and execute on a Go to Market strategy specifically targeting the East Coast/US Gulf/Caribbean and West Coast markets including a local broker strategy.Will investigate unidentified new business opportunities not included in targeted flows.

Principal Accountabilities

80% Customer relationship management and business development in the Americas:

  • Develop and actively manage targeted customer and broker relationships up to senior executive level.

  • Identify, price and contract freight with a special focus on long-term sustainable business with targeted customers.

  • Build and execute business development fully aligned with the overall trade-flow strategies of each trading desk.

  • Use deep customer knowledge to innovate and differentiate our service offering.

  • Through collection of customer intelligence, proactively develop a pipeline of business opportunities.

  • Monitor government policies (eg export/import tariffs and quota) and latest developments in world trade that have implications on trading strategy and customer relationships in key target markets.

  • Contribute with day to day and LT trading insights received from customers to help our trading analysis.

  • Monitor execution of contracts and shipments to ensure top quality service in coordination with operations and post fixing groups. Formal interviews to be held and acted upon.

20% Implement and share best practices of Go to Market strategies including a broker strategy, to achieve volume, margin and service level targets.




  • Undergraduate degree

  • Min 5 years commercial experience selling or trading to major industrial companies

  • Ability to reside in Teaneck NJ or surrounding area

  • Experience in developing strategic customer relationships & credibility in engaging customers at different levels

  • Strong experience in negotiation

  • Internal relationship development experience to align businesses.

  • Evidence of solution selling (identifying customer needs, issues and building solutions to match)

  • Experience and success in leading diverse teams to deliver solutions

  • Experience operating in an ambiguous environment and comfortable in setting direction for self and others

  • Strong analytical capability

  • Strong drive for results

  • Evidence of industry networking

  • Evidence of strong B2B marketing competence

  • MBA or similar post-graduate qualification

  • Commercial shipping studies

  • International Business studies

  • Experience in ocean freight chartering

  • Consulting experience with a name firm or internal experience at a blue chip company

  • Emerging markets experience

  • Knowledge of Charter party and voyage terms & conditions

  • Business fluency in Steel and Mining or power Industry

  • Spanish language skills

  • Knowledge of IMOS freight trading software
